Who will be chosen as top 5 on March 6 2010 at the SM City Davao. 5 finalist will be chosen from 15 candidates who have joined the search for Mutya ng Davao. Yesterday was the talent show and the best in talent went to my cousin Cherry Mae Maning.

Cherry Mae Maning

Age: 21
Course and Profession: Registered Nurse and Airline Cabin Crew
Community Project: Improvement of Shelter for Orphans

I pray that she will win the event. She even won the "Darling of the Press Award"

mutya ng dabaw

Today's Mutya ng Davao has become more tough than ever before. The pageant started on February 19, 2010 and there were 32 candidates at the start. The event screening started with a "no-make up screening". No make up! From this, it is guaranteed that who ever wins she definitely holds the natural beauty of a Davawenya. The theme for the event is "The New Dabawenya".

Whats more exciting is that the organizers of the event are serious about this pageant, and even made an online poll for the contestants.

To cast your votes and choose your candidate you can visit the official site and click vote, then confirm the email address sent to you by the site. Mutya ng Dabaw official site.

To vote for my cousin, visit the this link Vote for Cherry Mae Mutya ng Dabaw

As what Mayor Elias B. Lopez, said in an interview long ago, "The concept of Mutya is not a beauty contest. It is our search for the symbol of our hopes and aspirations as Dabawenyos represented by the beauty and character of our ideal woman. The focus is not just on the woman, but more so on what the woman represents."

Philippine Independence Day – Freedom from Spain 2009

111 years of freedom. 111 years of change, in leadership, change as a nation, and the lifestyle of all people.

We enjoy the freedom to this very moment. Its because of the triumph of the leaders who once fought a mighty empire. National Heroes as we may call them. But what kind of people are they? Those people are farmers, who carry with them bolos and knives. The true Filipino who owns this day are the Katipuneros, who are farmers, peasants, and fishermen who sacrificed their lives for their family to enjoy freedom, for us also to enjoy today.

And can we still see these kind of leaders now-a-days? Those people on the Senate? Congress? What about those people who are aspiring to be President and a leader of our nation? Can we see the blood and spirit of a Katipunero flowing in them? Will they die for our nation?

I know it is a fantasy to dream of such a leader. All we have now are people who manipulate the law. For their own good, for their own interests, and for them to satisfy their greed. Now its up to us to choose the lesser evil. They got all the same intentions, they understand the needs and desires of the poor, and use them to promote themselves and give promises. But in the end, the same things happen all over again. Once seated, its payback time for those who made them win and who gave them the most votes and influence. And its a sad thing, that it will go on until the end of the President's term. Leaving behind the promises that are meant to be broken.

Now I ask all of you who wants to be President. Will you die for our country?

The Philippines - My country, my home

The Philippines - My country, my home

“My home, my country, my native land, my Philippines.”

The Philippines is the place of my birth and may it also be the place where I shall cease my life. The Philippines is rich in treasures, God given natural beauty abound the archipelago. There are many beautiful destinations that one could venture, both local and tourists alike. The Philippines is rich in wonders, to name a few such as the Tubataha Reef, The Rice Terraces, The Chocolate Hills of Bohol, the perfectly cone shaped Mayon Volcano, etc.

The Philippines is also rich in culture. Influenced by different parts of the globe, the Philippine culture has become a melting pot of different heritages and ancestry. Majority of which are the Indo, Malays, and Chinese races. Yet, no matter where they may belong, a natural born Filipino will always be a Filipino. Born in the land of the Pearl of the Orient and the Cradle of the Brave.

By blood or by heart, Filipinos are close family oriented. Filipinos are hospitable and have high respect for elders. Filipinos are also very grateful people. They are hardworking and they enjoy life and are high in spirits. Intelligent and open minded. Filipinos are God fearing.

Every Filipino that have left for a job abroad or have migrated abroad, surely would come back home and visit their native land. Every pinoy have their own lasting bond from whence they were born. They treasure memories they have left behind in their homeland. This is evident in the way that almost all Filipinos who left their country would always contact and ask “Kumusta na dha sa Pinas? (hows everything there in the Philippines?). And would surely come back and visit.

All these and more, makes me proud I am a Filipino. The sparkle of your flag is victory that shines. Its stars and sun shall forever never dim.

More power to Filipinos Unite

SINULOG – The feast of the Blessed Senior Sto. Niño

SINULOG – The feast of the Blessed Senior Sto. Niño

The display of little colorful flag-lets that hang over the major streets of Cebu City, gives a distinction that the city is celebrating the Feast of the Patron Saint of Cebu, the Blessed Sto. Niño (Christ Child). Actually, in my own personal understanding, the Burnt Holy Child of Jesus could not be considered as saint because Jesus Christ is of Godly nature. But since, it has been accustomed that the patron saint of Cebu is Sto. Niño, that’s why I am using the title.

The celebration / feast happens during the third day of the first month of the year, which is January. This year, the Sinulog Festival happens today, January 18, 2009. Thousands of devotees, tourist (both local and international), international and local media, celebrities, politicians, and prominent personalities, come to witness this once in a year event and flock here in Cebu City.

The feast focuses on the burnt image of the Christ child Jesus, which was discovered by a Spanish soldier during the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines on the remains of a burnt settlement decades ago. The Child image of Jesus Christ gained its reputation because of its miraculous nature.

The feast starts with a fluvial procession that reenacts the entrance and arrival of the Spaniards and Roman Catholicism in the country. Followed by the world famous presentation of street dance, offering, parade, and celebration, the Sinulog Mardi Gras. With colorful costumes, participants from all over the country compete for the Best Sinulog Based Participation category, which includes best in interpretation of the Sinulog concept, theme, and history.

The criteria includes:
  • Theme, Concept / Ritual 10% - relevance to Sinulog, choice of material as to musicality, movement qualities and expressions, clarity of message and interpretation to dance movement.
  • Performance ----------------------------- 25% - precision and coordination, fluency, alignment, balance, focus, projection, rhythmic and spatial interest
  • Choreography --------------------------- 25% - creativity and artistry of steps and formation, style and expression.
  • Costume ---------- --------------------- 20% - artistic choice of color and style, effective use of props relevant to the interpretation of the theme / concept / ritual.
  • Props --------------------------------- 10% - Effective use of props relevant to the interpretation of the theme/ritual.
  • Sinulog Musicality ---------------------- 10%
  • TOTAL ------------------------------------- 100%
The Sinulog festival is also a time for both young and old, to enjoy and celebrate. Some household, prepare modest meals for the expected and the unexpected guest that would visit Cebu to celebrate the fiesta. Colorful souvenirs, accessories, and shirts, flood the side streets, to meet the demands of potential customers and buyers. Every restaurant offer their own kind of marketing strategy, such as hiring a playing song band, that would attract costumers to their establishment. Hotels are fully booked and occupied. With unlimited places and parties to go to, Cebu City has become a venue for fun, entertainment, and leisure.

For most Cebuanos and the rest of the Filipino people, the essence remains the same for today’s celebration and that is to celebrate, give thanks, and honor, our Protector, Provider, Healer, and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Thanks for reading, I hope you would post your comment and share you insights about this topic. I would be posting some amateur pictures after the parade, so in order to keep you updated, please do subscribe to my blog. Here.

Pit Senyor everyone and Happy Fiesta Cebu!!!

Philippine Independence Day – Freedom from Spain

Philippine Independence Day – Freedom from Spain

110 ten years ago, on this day, June 12, the year was 1898. After decades of Spanish rule, the Philippines finally had its freedom and independence from colonial rule. Emilio Aguinaldo waved proudly our flag in front of the Filipino people who gathered in Cavite el Viejo as the first play of our national anthem was heard among our brethren. Marcha Filipina Magdalo and now known as Lupang Hinirang.

I would like to thank the people who own this day. Because of them, we enjoy free speech, democracy, liberty and free will. Who are they? Who are these people? The true Filipino who owns this day are the Katipuneros, who are farmers, peasants, and fishermen who sacrificed their lives for their family to enjoy freedom, also, for us today to enjoy it. These people did not go to school and study the French Revolution like Rizal did. Nor they have great minds that made them famous like most of our National Heroes. These people just followed their hearts’ desire. The desire for truth and freedom.

I could not imagine what joy that would have been, especially for those who lost their love ones during the struggle. Maybe in this present time, we could not see the significance of that / this great day, June 12. For most people this day is just like any other holidays wherein you receive double pay or a time to take a day off, a day away from school, another time for strolling, a time to play or go out. Just like any ordinary day.

But if you would just imagine, if you were to live 120 years ago, every morning you wake up with fear, discomfort, and uncertain of your future. Like the Katipuneros did, every moment of their lives, controlled by people that is not of their own race. Deprived of the things that belong to them, land, property and even life. And then one day, you wake up and everything changes. Unspeakable joy and happiness, knowing your family’s lives would be much better. Experience the feeling to be free at last.

110 years may pass and so on. Our nation changes from time to time. Some say its getting better, and some say its getting worse. All I can say is, I hope the Katipuneros who gave us this freedom are proud and happy. I hope each and every one of us, on this day, or even everyday in our lives from henceforth, let us all embed in our hearts and minds the principles of the Katipuneros. Let their blood flow within our veins and become Katipuneros as well.

The Katipunan Objectives
Under the leadership of Bonifacio, the Katipunan laid down three fundamental objectives or aims: political, moral and civic. The political objectives consisted in working for the separation of the Philippines from Spain. The moral objective revolved about around the teaching of good manners, hygiene, good morals, and attacking obscurantism, religious fanaticism, and weakness of character. The civic aim revolved around the principle of self-help and the defense of the poor and the oppressed. All members were urged to come to the aid of the sick comrades and their families, and in case of death the society itself was to pay for the funeral expenses. For the purpose of economy however, the society saw to it that the funeral was of the simplest kind, avoiding unnecessary expenses so common under the rule of the friars.

Tubbataha Reef & Chocolate Hills

Let us all Filipinos support and vote for our very own wonders of nature that has been nominated on http://www.new7wonders.com/.

Let us all cast our votes. All votes counts, lets do this to help our tourism industry.

We need to be included in the top 7 to have a place in the new 7 wonders of the world. If we get the chance to be included, it would be a big positive impact on our tourism industry.

Tubbataha Reef:
Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral
reef in the Sulu Sea that belongs to the Philippines. It is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. The reef is composed of two atolls, North and South Reefs. Each reef has a single small islet that protrudes from the water. The atolls are separated by a deep channel 8 kilometers wide. Over one thousand species, including many that are endangered, can be found at on the reef. These include manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks.

Chocolate Hills:

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, all about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 sq km The hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, giving them the name "Chocolate Hills."

Half Cup Less - Philippine Rice Shortage

As of the moment, in disbelief I wondered how did this happen? I’m hearing about a rice shortage? My goodness. The Philippines is a rice eating country. Although we don’t export rice, the Philippines is considered one of the biggest rice producers in the world. And it is so ironic that the people now are advised to eat half of the rice they used to eat, which is, a bad thing. Considering Philippines supposedly has an agricultural economic set-up. Our lands are fertile and we have farmers. Maybe it is the price we pay for neglecting our agricultural necessities. The government is too complacent about putting enough focus on agrarian reforms, additional research and machineries, farmer support, etc. Now we have come to a point wherein everyone is affected. And the people who suffer the most are the poor who rely on rice. That includes my family, friends and me.

PROMDI - Probinsya Muna Development Initiative

If PROMDI or Probinsya Muna Development Initiative by Lito Osmeña have been pushed thru and implemented we might have avoided this scenario. If there was only a person who embodied this ideal about concentrating on the development on the outskirts or in the provinces by creating projects that would develop and utilize resources effectively and in a cost efficient way. Things like better road access, financial supports, additional training, community programs, or the Philippines could ask large business institutions to adapt-a-rice-field of some sort and giving them tax excemption benefits. Sounds crazy but any nice idea would do.

Eating Noodles

Eating instant noodles instead of rice, that is what the higher officials in the government are advising. This is a funny thing. Maybe they don’t know that we, the poor people, pair rice with noodles! Especially in the morning. Not just because it is easy to prepare but also because it is affordable. Everytime we need a soup to sip we always buy noodles. It also gives a feeling of being full in the stomach eventhough what was eaten was not nutritionally adviceable.

All I can say is, the government should take the necessary initiative. Study the agircultural system of the top rice exporting countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and even the U. S. A.

Oh, im sad, naiiyak na ako sa pinas. The Philippines makes me wanna cry.
